Chess is played by two players on a board of 64 squares. Each side starts with sixteen pieces – a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns – and the goal is to checkmate the opponent's king, trapping it so it cannot escape attack. Simple to learn and endless to master, it trains concentration, memory, planning and patience.
Start with the short tutorial in Chess King, which shows how every piece moves. Then play the computer on the Beginner level. When you are stuck, a hint shows a good move, and after the game the review explains which moves were best and which were mistakes. Daily missions and the streak give you a small, achievable goal each day – the easiest way to build a habit.
Most games between club players are decided by tactics: forks, pins, skewers and mating attacks. Solving checkmate puzzles is the fastest way to learn to see them. Work through mate in 1 and mate in 2, then test your speed in Puzzle Rush. Raise the computer level as you win, play rated games online and use the review to find the moments where the game turned.
